Yeast Infections in Men

Yeast infections are a female problem, right? Well, actually
men are frequently
the victim of an onslaught of yeast overgrowth. In fact, 12% to 15% of men will
contract a yeast infection after having sex with an affected partner. Yeast
infection in men will manifest with an itchy red rash that frequently has white
flakiness along the edges. There can be burning when urinating and a marked
redness near the tip of the penis. In some cases, there can be small blisters at
the tip and along the shaft of the penis. Unlike women, men are most likely to
get a yeast infection through sexual activity with an affected partner. Having
sex with an affected partner does not necessarily mean you will contract a yeast
infection, however.
Yeast still requires a ripe environment under which to grow.
A weak immune system, a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates, taking
antibiotics, and diabetes are all conditions that increase the likelihood of
getting a yeast infection.

How does a man treat a yeast infection. According to the mayo clinic, it is
acceptable for a man to use an over the counter yeast infection medication.
Apply yeast infection cream to the affected area twice daily for 3 to 7 days, or
longer until symptoms abate. Home remedies, like soaking the penis in unpasteurized yogurt or apple cider vinegar for five minutes daily, can also
alleviate the problem. If the problem persists it is important to see your
doctor, as recurrent yeast infections can be an indication of more serious
medical problems. It is crucial to avoid sexual activity until the infection is
cured in both you and your partner. It can seem that you are dealing with a
recurrent yeast infection when, in fact, the same infection is just being passed
back and forth between partners.
Another issue facing men is contracting an oral yeast infection through oral
sex. An oral yeast infection, thrush, is manifest by a white curd like coating
or patches on the tongue, inside of the mouth and throat. When the white patches
are scraped off it will leave a red sore. These sores can be painful and make
eating difficult. It is necessary to get a prescription of oral nystatin to
treat an oral yeast infection. Do not use over the counter medications orally;
they are intended for genital use only. Gentian violet can also be used to coat
the mouth and will effectively get rid of a oral yeast infection. Although a
useful treatment, gentian violet will stain your mouth and could lead to
embarrassment.
Related health issues are: fungal infections under the toe/fingernails, jock
itch, athlete’s foot and other fungal illnesses. If you are prone to any of
these conditions you might want to look into Candida – an illness caused by an
extreme yeast overgrowth. This condition can cause fatigue, brain fog, diarrhea
or constipation, bloating, fungal ear and nose infections, etc. This can make
life fairly unpleasant and requires more in depth treatments, often taking 6
months to a year to clear up. Consult your doctor if you feel you have a more in
depth yeast problem.
