Winning Interview Technique Grab The Advantage

See More articles From petereff

It may come as a surprise to some interviewees, but many of the interviewers you are going to meet are pretty much useless and most of the others are totally unprepared or incompetent. They are not the ruthless, efficient inquisitors you may think they are; this is great because you can turn this to your advantage.

I'm going to show you how to turn this to your advantage and how you can be better prepared than they. This means YOU take charge of the interview, but they won't realize it.

Most interviews finally revolve around just 2 things:

(a) whether the interviewer feels comfortable with, or likes you and

(b) how easily they can justify the decision (or not) to hire you.

Now you can help them with both part (a) and (b) of their decision making by working on your rapport with the interviewer which demonstrates 'compatibility' and by providing solid reasons to select and hire you.

Part (a) - Rapport is a personal thing but it helps to show genuine interest if you use the interviewer's name (so remember it!), smile sometimes and make good eye contact throughout the meeting. At the end of the interview always thank the interviewer for their time and say you hope to meet again.

Part (b) - The decision needs justifying and if you give them the ammunition to justify their decision, you put yourself in the strongest possible position.

All interviews comprise a series of questions and sometimes tests to establish a basis for employing you, but what it all boils down to is these five things:

- Why do you want this job?

- What makes you think you are right for the job?

- What benefits will we get from hiring you?

- What personality traits do you have (will you fit in)?

- How much will it cost us (to employ, maybe train) to hire you?

So to get your advantage, you must prepare for this and that means rehearsing questions related to every part of these 5 areas.

Now think about this. If the interviewer asks you these questions, you're ready. If the interviewer is useless and doesn't ask the right questions, you can grab the advantage by saying "may I tell you something about myself".

Your advantage is there to be seized, grab and go for it. This is how you get more job offers.
