Why Is Article Formatting Important?
Let’s say you’ve paid for an advertisement in a magazine, and the magazine
prints it all wrong in its next issue. How would you feel? Obviously, not very
good. This advertisement is representing you and your company. You don’t want
readers to take one look at the shoddy advertisement and dismiss your company
with a shrug. Well, the articles you write for distribution over the Internet
are also representing you and promoting your Web site indirectly. If the
articles are not formatted properly, that is the image you will be sending out
about your Web site. However, if you pay a little attention to article
formatting, readers are more likely to read your articles and click through to
your Web site. Follow the guidelines below to get the correct formatting for all
your articles.
Use the right text editor. The text editor you use for writing
articles can affect their formatting. For instance, although Microsoft
Word is a powerful word processor, it is not really the best tool for
writing articles for online publishers. When text is copied and pasted
from Microsoft Word to a Web form, it leaves a lot of unnecessary code
in the background. If editors have to manually edit out this code, they
will feel less inclined to publish your articles. The best programs to
write your articles are Notepad or WordPad as these do not embed any
extra code in your articles.
Maintain the correct article length: E-zines and article directories
have strict specifications about article length. Most directories prefer
articles of around 500 words. Ensure that you comply with minimum and
maximum word limit criteria specified by the publishers before
submitting your articles.
Divide your article into easy to read sections: Reading onscreen text
strains your eyes more than reading printed text. So, ensure there is
enough white space in your article. Instead of submitting one great
chunk of text, it is better to divide your article into short paragraphs
containing 3 to 5 sentences. In addition, people find it easier to read
short sentences so try to keep your sentence to around 20 to 30 words.
Follow publisher guidelines on article formatting. Most directories
will have their own specifications on article formatting. Be sure to
read these guidelines and format your article accordingly before
submission. If you do not find specific formatting guidelines for an
e-zine or directory, a safe rule is to format your articles to include
65 characters or less in each line, including spaces.
Avoid adding HTML code in your article: Most directory publishers
prefer articles in plain text format without any HTML tags. Therefore,
do not include any tags in your articles, unless specifically required
by a particular publisher.
If you want to write and submit articles to article directories, e-zines, and
newsletters, you need to format them correctly. As online publishers receive a
lot of article submissions each day, they may reject your article if it is not
formatted according to their guidelines.
