Toyota Hybrids Leading the Way !

Background
Toyota one of the world's latest auto companies and a leading player in the hybrid market has been producing hybrid cars since 1997 when they first produced the Prius in Japan. In 2001, they began to produce the Prius worldwide. It was the first mass produced hybrid car. Since then, a second generation of the popular Prius has been released. The second generation, which began with the 2004 model of the Prius, is a definite change from the original Prius. The new Prius, unlike the original, uses a high power Hybrid Synergy Drive that gives 50mpg.

Latest Models
In 2006, Toyota came out with its latest edition of the Prius, North American standard model is an improvement over earlier models, with a horsepower of 110, a four-cylinder gas engine and an electric engine that emits no pollutants. City driving yields around 60mpg, while highway driving gives 51mpg. The average mpg is 55, much more than the traditional car.

Comes Fully Loaded
On a full tank of gas, the Prius can go 589 miles without a stop. The Prius comes loaded with curtain airbags on the rear side and front, airbags on the sides, Bluetooth wireless technology and a DVD system that is voice-activated for navigation. Other features include a smart key system, leather interiors, and a backup camera. All of these features make the Prius very appealing to potential buyers.

Want a Prius that has the look of a sports car?
Then the North American Touring Edition of the Prius is a great choice. On the 2007 Touring Edition of the Prius, there are 16-inch alloy wheels, a European tuned suspension, and a large rear spoiler. Other features unique to the Touring Edition are headlamps that produce high intensity light and fog lamps. The Touring Edition retails for $23,070 in North America.

The Prius comes equipped with a fuel tank that holds 11.9 gallons of gas. Because of its fuel efficiency (50-60mpg), it will save you money over the long run and go over 500 miles on a single tank of gas, (as opposed to a standard car that can only go around 300-400 miles.) If you buy a Prius, you can look forward to substantial savings within the first year.

Toyota also produces the Camry hybrid car. Like the Prius hybrid, it comes with the Hybrid Synergy Drive. However, unlike the Prius, the Camry's mpg is only around 40 in the city 38 on the highway. The combined mpg is 39, significantly less than the Prius.

It's is a more powerful car than is the Prius. It has a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine and gets a horsepower of 187. The Camry hybrid also features a "ECO" button that is used to control the energy consumption. In the future, Toyota plans on including an eco drive light in the Camry to indicate whether or not the car is driven in an eco-friendly, fuel saving manner.

Toyota is certainly a manufacturer to keep an eye on for more cutting edge “hybrid” development
