Home theaters are getting more available everyday. As the cost for home theater components comes down, more homes are able to get a home theater system for their own house. The always increasing cost of movie theater tickets and concession stand prices make taking your family to the movies a very expensive night out. Just four tickets and a few drinks and popcorn can cost around fifty dollars.
There are only a couple real parts to a home theater. They're the DVD player, surround sound system, and the screen you are going to show the movie on. As the technology in each of these parts improves, the cost get cheaper on the older models. This makes some great bargains for families that don't need to be on the cutting edge.
DVD players are always being made better. Recently the big confrontation has been between HD DVD and BluRay. It looks like BluRay is going to win this confrontation. Sony is the owner of Bluray technology and stands to gain the most from this situation. DVD players are also available in progressive scan and a lot of other options. The best bet is to ask friends and salespeople to determine the best home theater DVD for your situation.
A great surround sound system is the backbone of a great home theater system. Nothing else makes it seem like you are at the local movie theater more than hearing your windows rumble and feeling your body rumble as the bass comes out of the sub-woofer and shakes the home theater. Be sure you buy a surround sound system with at least 5 speakers and a sub-woofer.
What your family actually views the movie on will depend a lot on the amount of room you have to put the theater in. Some families have available space for a full out projector and screen. The screen can be made out of blackout cloth which is available at almost all fabric stores. The recent Plasma Screen tv's can also become great home theater screens.
Don't forget the popcorn. Microwave popcorn is good, but nothing beats the oil popped popcorn you purchase from the theater. Almost all department stores sell at least one of these machine types. We personally really prefer the Whirly Pop brand machine.
