Sign Language for Babies A Huge Help to the Baby and the Family

See More articles From patrik.ewriter

There are two primary kinds of hearing loss: conductive and sensorineural. With conductive hearing loss, the baby has a hard time making sound waves travel by way of the outer ear, the eardrum or the small bones in the middle ear. With sensorineural hearing loss, the baby has a problem transforming sound waves to the electrical impulses necessary for hearing. Also, there is a problem sending these impulses to the brain. Both kinds of hearing losses can be present at birth or as the baby develops.

For babies with a family background of hearing loss, there is a big chance for sensorineural hearing loss to occur. It can also be due to other problems acquired during the mother’s pregnancy.

In the United States alone, approximately 20, 000 babies are born with permanent hearing problem every year, some of them not detected until they reach the age of 3. At this age, you can already see the delay in the child’s learning process. This is how important early detection is. Deafness slows down a child’s learning process. There are some though who only have temporary hearing loss. But of course the impact on the child’s ways and actions shows.

But how is hearing loss detected? Well firstly, there are screening tests done in some hospitals as early as the baby’s stay in the nursery. This is not available for all hospitals though, so you just need to look for one. In this case, an audiologist is the person to contact.

But if your baby has reached about three years old and you are just starting to suspect he may be deaf, here’s one thing to consider. It’s pretty logical actually. When your child does not respond to sounds, especially the loud ones, he may be experiencing loss of hearing.

If the baby’s hearing problem is diagnosed at an early age, he has more time to better his hearing with the doctor’s aid. But its treatment really has something to do with the cause. For temporary hearing loss, the right treatment of ear infections will do. It may not be an easy task though. For the more serious kind of hearing loss, surgery may be needed. There are also hearing aids and what doctors call cochlear implants which are basically a replacement to the inner ears.

Then there is the sign language for babies. Sounds amazing? Well it is by all means. It is helpful not only to the baby but also to the people around him.
