My Approach to Problem Solving

It has been observed that majority people respond naturally to solve their problems. In fact, We do not actually need to learn the process of problem solving. It is well said by Howard C. McAllister that Problem solving Is a natural process. Indeed we are born problem solvers . Have you ever observed how does a small child, who even hardly speaks a few words, solves his problems ? I added this point in my last report
also when I noticed my son who is only one-year old , tried to climb on my dressing table but failed due to short height. Then second day I noticed him attempting to climb the same dressing table with the help of a hard pillow. I was really surprised at him on using that pillow to step and to climb. No one guided him this but he himself
solved his little wish. He must had found this solution by brain storming approach. He must had considered various options but then had selected the best as per his intelligence. More or less, we do the same. Robert Harris suggested a general technique for help in solving problems at organizational level in his words as Post the problem on
a bulletin board or circulate it in a newsletter, memo, or whatever written medium is in use in your organization or group. Make a note that suggestions and solutions are solicited and that ideas should be sent to you At professional level, I went through many trainings, based on learning techniques to resolve issues at managerial level but in real life, I hardly used these techniques. At managerial level, we hardly remember steps so we behave naturally. We usually perceive and learn from experiences and observations and then we implement in similar situations. I had been assisting the Operational Head of Glaxo Smith Kline, Pakistan from September , 2006 to September , 2007. I found her a
hard lady to deal with. She was fifty-year old and was unmarried. People used to comment on her psychological state. She used to humiliate me on small things. She also tried to create obstacle in my growth by the mean of not allowing me on trainings with other colleagues. She used to remain unhappy and used to thread me for termination.
Once I discussed this painful situation with one of my colleague who had been working in the same company for thirteen years. She asked me not get worried as everyone knows that she has some attitude problem . Well, I was not satisfied with her answer. I, then sat in my office in lunch time with a pen and my diary. I listed all possible becauses of her dissatisfaction from my work. I also listed my performance level as per my punctuality and task meeting effectiveness. I found myself satisfactory. Another option. I listed was: she behaves negative due to work load. This also, I found irrelevant as her job description was just to take production updates from three production managers.
Production was also running completely satisfactorily. Those days, Audit had just been executed and the results were also very good. So this could also be not the reason of her behavior. Then I also focused on her nature. I was quite agree with her attitude problem cause as the person who used to assist her before me also resigned due to the same problem. As I was using the same computer which the earlier fellow Mr. Faheem was using, I had seen his brilliant work that were actually some electronic financial statements. I heard from old employees that Mr. Faheem had been working with the company for almost seven years. Only six months before his resignation, he was assigned under my boss. She was unhappy with him also. This option I found the best. After listing and then choosing the best cause made me confident about the cause of my problem. I then listed all possible remedies that were possible under environmental and other factors. I listed several options. One option was to discuss this problem directly with my boss so that to find some solution by discussion. Well this was not suitable as if it was her attitude problem then discussions could brought no change. Second option was to report Human Resources about this problem and to request them to change my department. That was also not suitable as HR Manager was her close friend and they were known for their rude behavior. HR didn’t ever take any exit interview as they seemed to be least bothered about problems that employees were facing. Third option was to search another job and to resign. I found the third option best with a little changes. I started my search for a new job and finally succeeded in getting a good job in a month time. I then resigned there but on my last working day , I sent a good-bye email to upper management and also sent carbon copies to our head quarter ( based in
UK ) reporting her attitude problem that also caused a high rate turn over after her possession as Operational Head. I then joined my new company. Now a few months have been passed at my new office and I am quite happy with my decision. My friends told me that a panel has been sent by GSK headquarter to enquire the cause of high turn over rate at my previous company.
