Kayaking Equipment Information for Beginners

There is not a lot of gear required to kayak. A kayak and paddle, life jacket, head gear and spray skirt are the normal basics.

Kayaks for surfing and doing tricks are usually nicknamed playboats. Rocky River Kayaks are usually nicknamed creek boats. Traditional river kayaks are for a quick ride and stability. Almost all kayaking novices start with a traditional river kayak.

One kayak does not fit all. The shape and size of kayaks is dependent upon the person's height, weight, and the type of water the kayak will be used in. Kayak companies almost always have demo or demonstration kayaks available for testing. This allows kayakers an opportunity to try before they buy.

Used kayaks cost much less than new kayaks. Good pre-owned kayaks can often be for sale in the classifieds of your newspaper, online auctions and similar venues.

Getting the right paddle requires getting the weight, length, type of material and shape of the blade into consideration. Along with the paddler's, torso shape and paddling style. Tall people, those with long torsos and users who like a slow ride will require longer paddles. Shorter users, or those with small torsos and users who like to paddle quickly and get the job over with will want to use shorter paddles.

Paddles for kayaking are built of fiberglass, wood, carbon fiber with aluminum shafts with blades built of plastic. The aluminum shaft paddles are the best choice for beginners. Usually kayakers are already into water hobbies and have a life jacket (also known as a personal flotation device). These can be bought in many stores, sporting goods stores and boating equipment stores and also online stores and auction websites.

Life vests, also known as personal flotation devices (PFD) are required by law. Pick a PFD rated for the type of kayaking you are going to do. Type III PFD's tend to be the most comfortable for paddling.

Kayaking helmets should be high quality and fit well. Like other sporting equipment, helmets have evolved and now are as much about fashion as function.
