Horse blankets come in a massive collection of different designs of blankets. Knowing the appropriate use for each of these blankets can be confusing. Here is some general information to get you going.
Turnouts blankets are design to help keep sweat, dust, and dirt away from the horse. It is also good for assisting the horse to stay dry from the outside and warm during the freezing winter months. There are two usual types of Turnout blankets. The bulky blankets are designed for usage during cold weather, these are generally called Turnout Rugs. The lighter blankets are usually called Sheets. These blankets are made from synthetic fibers and some will come with added materials for warmth.
Quarter sheets, also known as exercise rugs, offers a warm covering during exercise and other activities. Horses with short or trimmed coats can really benefit from quarter sheets. The sheets are spread out under the saddle or attached, depending on the design. Using this style of sheet can assist with rapid muscle cooling which can lead to cramping. If a horse becomes damp during a cooling down period, the horse might lose heat and experience muscle chill.
Alternatively, some riders choose to use their stable sheet and fold that in half to wrap their horse. This saves money to some by not purchasing a quarter sheet.
Stable Sheets, also known as Dress Sheets, are lightweight and not suitable for outdoor cold weather. These sheets are made with breathable materials and can be easily washed. The most common use for Stable Sheets is to cover the horse after its been washed, or transported. They are also useful in cooling horses down when they are sweaty. There are some companies that will personalize stable sheets to color coordinate to your stable colors.
Coolers are another style of blanket that can be used to cool down a horse. They protect the horse, from head to tail. They are created to allow airflow through them. Just like Stable Sheets, Coolers can be special made in a stable color and monogrammed. Some horse shows will offer Coolers as prizes, instead of the traditional awards.
Fly sheets are made to assist with keeping the flies away from their horses. Some fly sheets have added protection from the sun. Some styles include a close knit or large weave pattern.
Blanket liners are usually made from light material that protects the horse's hair from scraping or chaffing. Blanket liners cover the horse's chest.
Shopping for your horse's wardrobe requires some research. Be sure to have the right measurements before ordering any horse blanket or sheets.
