This article is being written by a new endurance athlete. One who had chronic asthma for 25 years of his life and still has severe animal induced asthma. I recently completed my first marathon in less than 6 ½ hours. If you would have met me 5 years ago you would have thought that to be impossible. I wasn’t overweight or sick, I was simply out of shape and unable to walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded. So what happened? Call it stupidity. No what really happened is I remembered a life long dream I had to be an athlete and succeed. I was always the kid that got chosen last in everything! I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this come hell or high water (What the hell does that really mean any ways?).
I found a training program in Orlando actually one of the best training programs that was ever created. If you would like you could go to “Team and Training” just put “Team and Training” into Google and you can find one close to you. I chose to find a marathon training program because I didn’t want to raise money to train for a marathon. I was only running for personal accomplishment. When I started training 7 months ago I couldn’t run more than 4 miles. In fact my first distance run was 3.5 miles and I thought I was actually going to die, I was completely miserable! I couldn’t actually figure out why people did this to themselves it seemed like torture. However I was determined to run a marathon in 6 months.
We followed the Galloway training program which is walk/run program. This method is used by Olympic athletes to help your body maintain speed and endurance for a long period of time, and a long distance. We started with 3 and 1’s this means 3 minutes of running/jogging and 1 minute of walking. I have to tell you, I will ALWAYS look forward to the walking! Even today where I consistently run 8-10 miles a day I look forward to the 1 minute walking break, god does it help. Eventually after you run your first marathon or when you feel comfortable you can advance to 4 or 5 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking. I strongly recommend the Jeff Galloway MARATHON! book for all new marathoners. I just don’t recommend his nutrition it’s not very good. Speaking of nutrition I followed an organic local food diet. I am a vegetarian and I was always scared that I would not be able to intake enough protein to maintain myself. I have trouble putting on the pounds. I know some of you will read that and think ohh booo hoo to you. Well listen for those of you who have a hard time losing weight, I have the same hard time gaining it.
So after I got the training program started and the nutrition down all the aches and pains kicked in. I hurt in places I didn’t know I could hurt in. My eyelids hurt, how is that even possible? However I kept going because and this is a HUGE because I found someone in my training program I did not want to let down! Listen folks that is very very very important! I am sure all of you reading this have let yourselves down hundreds of times and if it is up to you than we are all screwed! I know that sounds harsh but that is how I was. However you and I will do anything we can possibly do not to let someone special in our lives down. Right? I am know I am right. We have all been there we will work extra hard, do whatever it takes to make sure we don’t let a person down, because we want them to respect us, like us or for whatever reason you have. Well in my training program I had a coach and she was awesome, and supported me fully! The only reason I never quit was because I didn’t want to disappoint her. This is my advice to you if you are someone who has started things and then quit because it just got too hard. Find someone who you respect, like or look up to. Let them know your commitment and make sure they hold you to account for that commitment and then complete your marathon training and finish that marathon with power and pride!
To wrap this up, I finished the space coast marathon in 6 hours and 13 minutes. My coach was BJ through the Track shack program in Orlando. I am now training for the Florida Ironman competition in November and I have run over 1000 miles. I never could have done this if other people I respected didn’t believe in me and push me and now I can coach and be that person for someone else.
