Audiobooks are gaining in popularity--- big-time.
It is estimated that the market for Audiobooks in the US will exceed $200 million in 2007.
At one time audiobooks were regarded as being suitable for the visually impaired. As the pace of life quickened so has the market for audiobooks. People seem to have less time to sit down to relax and read a book these days. Especially those who have to make a journey to and from work. Travelling by car, bus or train, the ideal way to enjoy a good story is to listen to an audiobook.
And they are so easily transported, unlike books, which can be quite bulky.
One of the main attractions of Audiobooks is that they are accessible immediately from your computer. No need to go to your bookstore. Download them to your MP3 player and you can listen to your favourite story right away.
The businessman, the housewife, the jogger, the student; these are all Audiobook users. People trying to learn languages are finding Audiobooks indispensable.
The range of audiobooks has grown significantly in recent years. The categories now include classics like Shakespeare which is not easy to read but is enjoyable to listen to when dramatised by a professional cast. Other categories include children's, business, self help, foreign languages, health matters, biographies, history, religion, TV Shows, Films etc...
In the school environment it is much more cost effective to invest in audiobooks which can be shared than to purchase a book for each pupil. Another advantage for children is that they can develop their pronunciation better and improve their grammar by listening to well produced audiobooks. Children whose comprehension may be greater than their reading skills will also benefit from audiobooks.
You can download a 1 hour compilation of British comedy for FREE from the website. This includes some Fawlty Towers clips. Hopefully you will remember the sketch about “Don’t Mention the War”.
