Antibiotics and Yeast Infections

Antibiotics, birth control pills, wearing tight undergarments, and a suppressed immune system are just a few factors that can trigger the overproduction of fungus. Antibiotics are a common cause of oral thrush outbreaks. It is confusing because they can help but other times actually cause trouble in your body.

Antibiotics kill off both bad and good bacteria, but it does not kill off fungus. They promote candida infection because they are unable to differentiate between good and bad bacteria and end up killing all. The elimination of good bacteria increases the production of candida. Unfortunately they are now the biggest cause of yeast infections, and there's one reason why so many women need antibiotics and that is for a urinary tract infection. Approximately 10 million women in America will go to see their doctor this year with a urinary tract infection.

Medications are used for 1 to 7 days, depending on the type. All treatments cure vaginal yeast infection 80% to 90% of the time. Medical studies have shown that most women misdiagnose their own yeast infections, and can miss other important vaginal infections, such as trichomonas, gardnerella, chlamydia, or gonorrhea that may produce somewhat similar symptoms. Therefore, unless one is absolutely certain of the diagnosis, a visit to a health care provider experienced in women's health is necessary.

Certain foods (particularly sugars and refined carbohydrates) encourage the yeast that is in turn boosted by high-sugar environments. Large amounts of probiotics, vegetables (especially green ones) and healthy fats (for example coconut oil and avocado) are needed to build back up a healthy intestinal flora. Certain things, like heat and antibiotics, can cause an overgrowth of this flora. When this happens, a woman has a yeast infection and must seek treatment for symptoms such as burning, itching, redness and other discomforts.
