It is not surprising that one of the largest markets in the world of health and beauty
is anti-aging skin care products; the growth in popularity is due in no small part to
the fact that we are all living and working longer. This is done using skin care
products that encourage the growth of the protein collagen which happens to be the
main source of the protein used in the connective tissue of skin; almost 25 percent of
the protein in skin is actually collagen. Collagen is a member of another family of
substances that aid in reducing the signs of aging. this group is called antioxidants
and apart from their cell repairing ability, they may be able to reduce the risk of
cancer and heart disease.
Probably the best known of these anti-oxidants is vitamin C
although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. Vitamin C
formulated skin care treatments suffer with a particular problem of oxidizing on
contact with the air which causes a problem for users and manufacturers.
To overcome
this problem, manufacturers use alternative skin care treatments that still provide
the same benefits but not the high manufacturing costs. Although these products are
good, they cannot actually compare with vitamin C but fortunately vitamin E and alpha
-lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants so can be used to gain the same effect.
Vitamin E
is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is found in human blood, it helps build resistance
against infection like cancer. Lipoic acid which is found inside every cell of the
body helps generate the energy that keeps us alive and functioning. It is known to
combat the signs of ageing very effectively by reversing skin damage caused by the
ageing process.
Phytochemicals aren't produced by the body but are extracted from a
number of plants and used in many anti-ageing skin care products to combat the signs
of aging. A secondary but more important use of phytochemicals is the effect they have
on the prevention of breast, prostate and colon cancers.
Other vitamins from the B
group are also used in anti-aging skin care like vitamins B5, B6 and B12 for example.
The use of anti-aging skin care products is a huge scientific field to research and
has far greater potential than just producing goods that reduce the visible signs of
age.
A great deal about the aging process has already been learned and the products
available today are already far more advanced than ten years ago but there is still a
long way to go. With the research that is now taking place, many people are confident
that in time, more effective, cheaper anti-ageing skin care products will be
discovered.
At the moment though, science is still behind the field of natural anti-
ageing methods and it might take some time to replace them. Drinking plenty of water,
getting a good night's sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits
and keeping stress at bay are an essential means of delaying the aging process.
