Acid rains and much more

It is mostly believed that the rain water is the purest form of water. But strangely it is not so! Rain water is sometimes more acidic than that of the acidity of the lime juice. Even the unpolluted air, is slightly acidic because of the dissolved carbon dioxide and other acidic gases which are normally present in the air. On the same animal and human breath add to the atmospheric carbon dioxide. With the tremendous increase in burning of tons of fossil fuels and release of noxious gases into the atmosphere, there comes extra acidity, which is dissolved in rain to produce weak sulphuric acid and nitric acid, thus turning the rain into acid rains.
Acid rains are to blame for blemishing the eternal beauty of important historical monuments like The Taj Mahal. Acid rains are also increasing the acidity of the water bodies and also damage the forest. Acid rains can lead to soil acidification, a gradual process that causes soils to accumulate potentially harmful substances, including aluminum and iron. Soil acidification can compromise the ability of trees and other vegetation to resist pests. Over time, acidification can cause forests and crops to wither and die.
Who can forget the amazing red rain that fell on the parts of Kerala a few years back? The possible explanations were that there was atmospheric dust blown from the deserts, debris from meteoric collisions, single celled organisms or spores in the atmosphere.
Be it acid rain or colored rains, all pale into insignificance when compared to some bizarre objects that have been showered from the skies in different parts of the world at various times in recorded history. The objects range from frogs, worms, snakes and fishes to stones and pebbles and blocks of ice and lumps of burning sulphur in the absence of any causative occurrences nearby, like volcanic eruptions or tornado or hailstorms.
One thing is certain, that no one can predict what’ll drop from the heavens next. These freaks of nature, like other realms of aerial mysteries, will always remain an enigma.
